And I tell you who you are. Tags when you click “show only my tips”, the X-ray to see if a person is interesting enough to add. The dynamics really start kicking in once you enter more than 10 tips.

Lay-out

May 8th, 2007

We’ve just uploaded an update of the layout.
An essential, yet simple functionality is the possibility to tag tips as your favorites.

Not So-So is as big or small as you want it to be. You decide the kind of tips you want to follow by clicking the people or their (sub)categories you wish to follow on your screen. If you see a tip passing by of the tipstream from likeminded people, you just tag it as a favorite for later use.

Buzz

May 8th, 2007

Anybody working @Not So-So who dares to pronounce the word “Buzz“, “Angel” or “Hero” gets fired; yes even the guys with the money, it’s in our shareholders-agreement. –>

Mix

May 8th, 2007

Bart from Edge of the deserts calls Not So-So “a mix between blogging and delicous”. Actually, made a comparable quote after our presentation and called us “delicious for real life”; I wished I remembered who it was.
The ‘rating system’ which Bert refers to is the ‘likeability’ feature I talked about. Indeed, comparable to what many know from last.fm: yu are on the profile of another user, and based upon your and his/her tips Not So-So reveals how ‘likeminded’ both of you are. Eventually this could be applied on a tip level, but that’s even more complex.
I already wrote on the many challenges on this feature. First of all we have to avoid the problem last.fm has, making the recommendation and likeability useless once you have a volume of tracks/tips. And secondly, there’s the algorythm which is much more omplex in our case. Last.fm has a limited amount of unique entries (a unique song by a unique composer).

Bart also writes on the calendaring system, which is one of our priorities.
Just look around you to the number of singular postings on blogs where people try to share where they will be in a lifestyle related context.
Peter making a Tango calendar, so that people can keep track which Tango evening happens where
Luc posting on which public events he will be
If you collect your closest friends to share your best tips, you will also be wanting to share with them (and only them) when you will be where; in other words, invite them implicitely to an afternoon in the park, a drink in your favorite Friday night hangout, a concert, exhibition or even citytrip. –>

Can

Robin published a sharp first analysis on Not So-So. W

At Barcamp, many people asked us if we were not aiming ‘too wide’, if we shouldn’t focus on a specific intrest like travel, restaurants or fashion.
We are clearly convinced we this is not the way.
Why?
Because the main motivation to be on Not So-So is not users searching through a big repository of tips. No, Not So-So is about users creating their own very niche environment of tips from trusted, likeminded persons.
Every user can decide to create his own microcosmos. Imagine that I’m a photograher and only interested in tips on photography. I might stumble on a person living in France writing excellent suggestions on photography, but also tips on ballet performances. Since I’m not interested in ballet, I’ll only follow the category photography of this person, all her other tips will disappear in oblivion for me.

I had a short chat with Robin this evening over MSN. At the end he dropped a line that his parents in law were going to visit Florianapolis in Brasil. I invited my Brazilian wife in the conversation, since she lived quite a while in beautiful Floripa. She wrote Peter she was going to drop some tips on hotels, restaurants, beaches in Not So-So.
This automatism is exactly what Not So-So is about:
Robin was already following S her tips on Not So-So. Before the existence of Not So-So, she would spend an hour writing a mail with some suggestions to Robin: one to one. However, S knows that many other of her direct contacts might be interested one day in those tips.
Now she just stores them in Not So-So and tags them with ‘floripa’. If Robin want his parents in law to read S her tips, they can just register and follow S’s tips and save the ones they find useful to their favorites in Not So-So for later use.
Whenever a friend of S would wink her they are traveling to Floripa, she can just tell them to sign-up to Not So-So, fellow her tips and click the tag ‘Floripa’, instead of trying to find back the mail she wrote months ago to someone else. Moreover, the tip she wrote on that restaurant at the beach might have received 2 other reviews by that time, making the tip even more relevant for the parents in law of Robin. –>

Barcamp

May 5th, 2007

We truly enjoyed being at BarcampBrussels today.
The motivation and vision embedded in most of the presentations we saw was truly energizing.

The reactions received on our first public Not So-So presentation were rock solid. We’ll be in touch with many people which gave as very insightful hints.
And trust us, we drool as much as you on the prospect of having a del.icio.us-like plugin which posts your entered tips automatically from Not So-So to your Blog.

As promised during our presentation:

1. People present at Barcamp can test the current pre-alpha platform
> Visit test.notsoso.com and click ‘register’
> Register with your ‘usual’ mail address; you’ll receive a login and password
> Although this platform is pre-alpha, it will have a +95% uptime and all information stored will be automatically migrated to the final platform.
> You can follow-up my own tips via this RSS feed
> You can follow-up the tips of my friends and me via this RSS feed
We’d love to receive any reactions, input, critics, suggestions from you; don’t hesitate to mail me on (my first name) at (notsoso) dot (com)

2. The intro presentation:

As agreed: more over a Caipirinha on our opening evening at our offices in Gent somewhere early June, we’ll notify you in due time. –>

Barcamp

May 4th, 2007

All geared up for our first public demo at Barcamp Brussels. Still alpha, but we should be able to demonstrate the dynamics.

We’ll surely attend from our sides the presentations of:
Pascal Van Hecke: Open ID (though we don’t believe in Open ID as long as all our online bank accounts on this Globe don’t work with our Open ID)
Kris Buytaert: Squeezing the most out of MySQL (sounds like the average NSS working day)
Bernard Grymonpon: Performance and scaling (sounds like our dogs barking at us)
Christophe Willaert: Intro to Symfony
Juriaan Persyn: Another person squeezing the same MySQL
Peter Vandenabeele: Optimize taxes in a start-up company (wondering how offshore is integrated in the model)
Peter VanDijck: Starting a company in Belgium (we have to tell Peter how smooth Belgium rolls the carpets compared to opening a company in Brasil)
Steven Noels: Business and open source
